General election in the Bangladesh was held after a gap of seven years and it marks the return of multi-party democratic politics in the neighbourhood .

Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh also called Sheikh Hasina, President of the Awami League Party of Bangladesh and personally congratulated her on the landslide victory in the general elections.

The historic victory of the Awami League and the Grand Alliance led by Sheikh Hasina is a major landmark in democratic politics in South Asia.

The large turnout of voters and the successful conduct of elections is a resounding victory for democracy. The people of Bangladesh have spoken with one voice to reiterate their faith in the democratic process and their desire for development and progress, the Prime Minister said.
